Wherein I Ask Your Opinion
December 30th, 2010 § 15 Comments
Christmas is officially over in The Twenty-Fifth Year household.
My brother and sister-in-law came into town last night. Gifts were exchanged, dogs were canoodled.
Seriously, this poor thing doesn’t stand a chance with her Auntie Cait. I am a chronic dognapper.
There’s going to be a lot of this going on for the next few days.
I’m still in disbelief that another year is just a few days away. 2010 was so, so many things to me. I feel like I’ve conquered several life changes this year and I only see them continuing to roll through the next.
I’ve never been big on the whole New Years resolution bit. I’m an idle-Tuesday-morning-in-the-shower kind of goal setter. Still, I think it’s really great to create some insight with the turn of a calendar page. I haven’t decided if and what I’ll share, but if you’ve been a follower of the blog, you know I’m all about the mental health and happiness and that I love sharing. That being said, 2011 is scheduled to be a happy year that you’ll be hearing about.
As I find it quite natural, I see The Twenty-Fifth Year taking a turn in direction this year. It’s quite obvious I’ve fallen head over heels for photography, so that’s going to be a big part of it. However, if there ever was a time I needed some direction from you, Dear Readers, this is it. What would you like to see in 2011? I cherish each and every one of you checking in on me when you do and I’d like to make your stay enjoyable by accommodating your needs. I’m kind of like a four-star hotel in that respect.
So, go on – dish! spill! give it to me! More of this, less of that? I’d really like to know! And, no I will not be a food blogger. My gourmet diet consists of Green Monsters, Christmas cookies, coffee and vegetarian subs from Jimmy John’s. You will be bored.
For real, I want to know. So please, leave me a comment. Even if it’s one sentence of a suggestion. You can always email me, too, at thetwentyfifthyear [at] gmail [dot] com.
Oh, and it would be in your best interest to be honest. Now that Santa is on vacation, I’ve got my guard dog all over the, “You better watch out, you better not cry,” duties.
Merry and Bright

It’s happened.
I’ve been bitten by the DSLR bug and I can’t stop taking pictures.
Now I can see why you crazy food bloggers get carried away love taking snaps of your food so much.
Instead of telling about how wonderful my holiday was, I decided to give you a light little post filled with some Q&A that the lovely Gracie tagged me in.

I could have tagged some fellow friends out there, but I’m letting you take free reign if you’d like to take a break from normal blogging!
I’m headed back to work today, but first, here’s a few snaps. I hope you like photography because homegirl is obsessed.
How was your holiday (or Saturday)? Anyone else a new camera owner?
Gotta Have Faith
December 21st, 2010 § 17 Comments
I realize that we all aren’t on the same page here. We’ve got our own agendas and our own belief systems. We’ve got life down and we’ve got it figured out. Suggestions are welcome, but only if we’re in the mood to really hear them. Otherwise, keep your opinions to yourself.
I know you’re busy but can I ask you something? Can I ask it hoping you’ll pull up a chair to my table and have an open mind? That you won’t fly off the handle, jump to conclusions or form opinions without really thinking about what I have to say?
OK.
When did religion get a bad rap?
Seriously. Clear your mind of what end of the spectrum you’ve got your feet firmly planted on. Forget the extremists, the drawn-out services, the traditions, the riots, the separation of Church and State.
Why is it such a big deal to be proud of your faith? When did it become customary to raise an eyebrow when “God” or “Jesus” passes over the lips of someone in conversation?
Perhaps it’s because the very idea of faith and religion is worlds away from what it was just a year ago in my mind. Perhaps it’s because I’ve met and let a lot of unfriendly people come way too close to my heart and my life and I now know there’s more to the world than just them.
Perhaps it’s because I’m growing, grown, older. Perhaps it’s because I care to listen. I care about more than just myself. I want to be better, live better and surround myself with people who have those same goals.
I’ve found them through church.
What kind of thought does that spark in your mind? Do you think it’s weird? Do you think I’m a freak? Does it make you uncomfortable? Do you think it’s dumb?
Can you identify with that? Can you understand it? Do you care to?
Do you think it’s “cool” but pass over it, like a box of Cheerios in an entire aisle devoted to cereal? Another flavor. Another day. It’s just faith, after all. You’ve got your own belief system – and it’s working out just fine.
I was the same way.
Having been raised Catholic, religion felt more like an obligation than anything else. Sunday mornings – and later Wednesday nights – were devoted to an hour of Sunday School and an hour of church. By the time I was in first grade, I could recite the entire mass right along with the priest. Stand up, sit down, kneel. Communion, confession, sharing the sign of peace, hymns and homilies. One blurred into the next.
It’s not that I didn’t care. I just didn’t care. Do you know what I mean?
Now, it’s of an importance to me. It’s something that has pulled me through a really tough year. It’s given me light in what felt like an eternally dark room. It’s proven itself time and time again to always be what picks me up when everything else has let me down.
Yet, I still find myself the recipient of the quizzical stares, the five seconds of silence, the cookie cutter “that’s nice” response.
If it’s not that, it’s an intense debate. A series of questions fired off by a spiteful tongue. Furrowed brows, cut-off sentences and defensive comebacks. It almost feels like they have the right to come at me, but I have no right to stand behind what I believe in.
Maybe these people find religion to be cheesy. Perhaps they can’t believe that something as simple as prayer and a book that’s thousands of years old can change a life. After all, it’s 2010; we live in a world webbed in wi-fi where our laptops and smart phones defy all odds. Tell me then, when life gets down to the wire, when you’re at the end of your rope and it feels like you’ve got nowhere to turn, is there an app for that? Does inner peace come from your iPhone, your credit card or your 42” high definition television?
I’m not trying to push a religious agenda on you. I’m not trying to convey that you should even attend church or pray or believe in God. It’s just something that has worked for me even after spending two decades not really getting it. I’ve been a witness to the pushy preaching. I pushed it right back. I’ve listened to the radicals who believe if you don’t live without sin, you’re damned to hell. I’ve read about extremists who protest and riot. I know there are people out there who will write you off if you don’t believe in the exact same thing and who look down on anyone who does just one thing wrong in their book.
I’ve dealt with them in the best way I know how – with an open mind. I’ve interjected my opinion when it’s asked, but I’ve taken it for what it’s worth and walked away. I didn’t get angry. I didn’t get hostile and start yelling. I didn’t call them stupid. I let them have their say because I believe that’s the respectful thing to do.
Despite that, I know what it’s like to get turned off by people and situations like that. I also know there is a completely different side to faith; one that accepts you for who you are or what your past entails. The people you’ll meet that are real people. They don’t sit at home and read the Bible every night – they lead exciting, normal lives. They are at your grocery store, sitting in the same movie theater, stuck in traffic at rush hour. They get angry and mad and sad and frustrated and happy. They live the same life you and I do, and it’s not a perfect one. In a word, they are me. And you’re coming here to read what I have to say, so I have to assume you think I’m cool, or nice, or smart, or something. But you don’t think I’m a freak or an agenda-pusher.
Do I think it would benefit the non-believers if they shared the same beliefs I do? Absolutely. If they came to me, seeking advice, I’d tell them and encourage them to pray and ask for guidance. We’re all self-proclaimed experts in something, right? Why can’t mine be titled, “How faith changed my life”?
So, I’m just wondering, then, why is it OK for you to clamor on about your fantasy football team, your frequent flier miles, the four-star restaurant you had dinner at, the latest episode of “Real Housewives,” who won “Survivior,” your latest celebrity crush, your boyfriend, your engagement ring, your wedding plans, your 401K, your birthing plan, your volunteer work, your intermural soccer league, your training runs, your baking skills or Sunday Night Football without me asking, “Why?” or harshly voicing my “I don’t believe in that,” opinion. Yet, when it’s my turn to talk about something I enjoy and love, too often that’s exactly where the conversation goes.
In lieu of a “good tidings and cheer” Christmas message, that is the question I’m posing to you instead.
After all, you wouldn’t spend your Saturday morning in leaps and bounds over the latest gotta-have-it-gadget or designer handbag if it wasn’t for religion. So tell me, when did it get a bad rap?

Well, friends, as if this time of the year couldn’t get any busier, homegirl has decided to just load up on life. I’ve picked up another job and quite a bit of freelance work including a gig in social media (!!). I actually had to break down and buy a pack of highlighters to color coordinate my planner. Yes, I am that girl.
In my former life as a Northerner, right around now, I’d be running around town in my hat and gloves, sliding through slush, gazing at shiny sparkly things and gearing up for the holidays in full form. Now, I find myself shivering when the mercury drops below 60. I have to practically force myself to down a bowl of peppermint ice cream every night just to get into the holiday spirit. It’s such a travesty.
I think this whole lack of feeling like it’s the second week of December is reason to blame for barely having started my Christmas planning, let alone shopping. Combination of fully knowing I need to get my butt in gear and that it does, in fact, feel like Christmas to some of you is prompting me to share some more of my craftiness with you.
Today I’ll show you how to turn this:
Into a great little gift!
For this project, I used:
-Mini composition notebooks: found at the Dollar Store. I believe there were four or five in a pack – each pack totaling less than $2. Do not fall victim to an office supply store. You will pay triple that price – believe me, I’ve done your research for you.
-Scrapbook Paper: found at Hobby Lobby and yes, mine was on sale. I decided to stick with a color theme (black and white) so I could maximize my supplies. Whatever flirts your skirt.
-Ribbon: found at Hobby Lobby. I got two kinds, one sheer black, the other a thick black with white stitching.
-Adhesive: found at Hobby Lobby. I liked this, until it made a complete sticky mess and I had to feed the tape through for every use. Regardless it held great. (Note: I did need multiple refills.)

-Double Sided Tape. The brand I used is super durable, easy to apply and found at Hobby Lobby.
-Fiskars Ultra ShapeXpress and Shape Template: found at Hobby Lobby (more photos below). You’ll need a mat for cutting. I found mine in my Mum’s closet. Sorry.
-Cardstock: found at Hobby Lobby. Black – like you’d expect anything else.
-A fun pen. Mine is silver and from Hobby Lobby.
Step 1
Cover one side of notebook with adhesive. The device I used simply rolled the glue onto the surface - just like Wite-Out correction tape. I then lined up the corner of my scrapbook paper with the edge of the notebook. I try to use as many existing corners on the paper so that I have less to cut and less chance of messing up. Rub back and forth, pressing firmly to ensure adhesion.
Repeat on opposite side. Cut edges off with scissors or x-acto knife – the latter works better.
Now you should be here:
Note: I only covered up until the black binding because it fit in with my color theme. If you want to cover all the way to the edge, you can, however you’ll have one more edge to cut.
Step 2
Open the notebook so the first page is facing you on the right. Apply double-sided tape or adhesive along the inside of the cover about 1/8″ to 1/4″ from the crease.
Next, loop the ribbon around the notebook to get an idea of how much to cut. You can do this before you apply the double-sided tape if yours doesn’t have the peel away cover like mine. Once you’ve got your desired length, snip and apply to the tape.
To fasten, a knot or a bow will do. I used both, so it’s really about the ribbon and your preference.
Step 3
To really personalize it, next you’ll need the ShapeXpress and the pattern template. Now, I’m sure there are many versions of this tool and perhaps if you’ve got a steady hand, you can get some great shapes freeform. I need all the help I can get.
I decided on the 2″ circle for this project. I lined up the shape template on the cardstock and went to town. Again, the key here is to use as much as possible to eliminate waste.
A crafty tip from me to you: it’s OK to be intimidated and/or have no idea how to do something. It took me a solid five minutes to figure out how to assemble this cutter and use it. And, OK, my Mum totally had to help me.
Also, you may run into some of this action:
Again, have no fear. Just buy one of these little guys.
It’s a craft sanding block. Or something like that. I didn’t know they existed until I raided my Mum’s closet. Anyhow, like you think it would, this baby smooths everything out from rough edges to little nubs of extra material. I used these to smooth the edges of the notebooks, too.
After all that, I applied some adhesive to the circles and affixed them to the lower right hand corner of the notebook. What you write on the circles is entirely up to you – initials in a unique handwriting look great, or if you’re giving to a blend, you can write in the name of their blog!
I love these because they can double as a card to accompany a bigger gift.
But they also stand really great on their own.
Since you’re buying everything in larger quantities for this, it’s easy to make a lot and cross a lot of people off your list. Just make sure you tell them they’re handmade and watch their eyes light up as they exclaim, “You MADE this?! No way!”
Way.
Better to Give Than to Receive

Now that Halloween is behind us, it’s only a matter of days before the familiar melodies of Christmas carols start greeting you at the doors of your favorite stores. Actually, I take that back. I saw twinkle lights and wrapping paper at Costco two weeks ago.
I love giving gifts. For me, Christmas is usually reserved for family. Birthdays are when I make a bigger deal for my friends. I use them as an opportunity to really let my creative juices flow. Fall is a busy one when it comes to the celebration of my second family and since I’ve got a lot more time on my hands, I’ve been documenting my craftiness over the last few weeks. I figure if you’re anything like me, you like putting a little personality under the bow, and if you’re really like me, you’d rather make the bow yourself, and while you’re at it, the wrapping paper, too. So without further ado, let’s get down with our crafty selves!
The first thing I do is decide on a theme. Sometimes I’ll use the recipient’s pending age, other times I’ll theme around an interest of theirs or even a popular phrase or saying. Many times I’ll hone in on something that’s uniquely “us.” For example, I once themed Carrie’s birthday, “Carrie And Caitlin’s Infinite Playlist” – inspired by Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist. The tag for each gift looked like an iPod and on the screen was a song thats lyrics directly pertained to what the gift was and each song had some sort of history with one or both of us. I gave her a first aid kit for her car with a line from Danity Kane’s Damaged - “Do, do you got a first aid kit handy/Do, do you know how to patch up a wound?” I used to call her from Philly every time I heard that song on the radio and sing it, so it became a running joke with us.
This year, I decided to play up her age with a little rhyming.
28 and It’s Never Too Late
The gifts
The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to get Carrie a book. As someone who loved Eat Pray Love, I wanted to share its message with her. Admittedly, Carrie’s not a big reader. So when she transferred to a different office that had her in the car for about 90 minutes a day, I knew the best solution was to get her an audio book. I’m a member of Borders rewards so you know homegirl was slappin’ down the coupons for this purchase.
The week before her birthday, Carrie came to visit me and we both made our first – and certainly not even close to last – trip to Anthropologie. Was it the $128 silk tops that we petted and drooled over? No. It was the door knobs and coffee mugs. She pointed out several things she liked and I brewed over my decision until the very last possible minute.
Although she walked around the store longingly clutching a set of lovebird tea towels, I decided against spending $42 on stitchery and instead got her two beautiful cups.
When we lived together, graceful Caitlin had a little accident in the kitchen claiming one victim – Carrie’s favorite coffee mug. It’s impossible to find anywhere but online and when I saw these they seemed like a fair replacement (for now, Care, I promise to get your beloved yellow mug back in your hands.) She loves simplicity and the color white and shabby chic decor. I think these pretty much encompass all that, don’t you?
The third element in her gift was something else she pointed out with pleading eyes.
I don’t know anything about this except for the simple fact that it smelled good. I like it when things do what they’re supposed to.
The tags
If I had a trademark for my themed gifts, it would be the tags. It’s my goal to intricate them into the theme as much as possible. Seeing that I chose time, I figured what better way than with a clock? There was no doing this with my own two hands so I called upon my BFF.
Once I pulled an image I liked – from a free site, law abiding citizen FTW! – I took my work into iPhoto.
A little antique effect, some edge blur and retouch. Shazam!
Now, transport to Pages. Zing! Let’s pick a font, shall we?
Perfect. And because I have the need to be anal about consistency, duplicate!
Putting It Together
When I get a good theme working in my head, getting the text down for the tags is a cinch. The thing to keep in mind here is make sure they all connect. You don’t want your theme to be “What’s Cookin’?'” and throw a bracelet in there. Unless it’s a charm bracelet with fried eggs and toast, that just doesn’t go. But if you’re looking for that sort of gift, Etsy is probably a shoo-in (and 100 bonus points if you find it and tell me.)
Once I had the tags done and printed, I had to find accompanying elements to their design.
Then it was time for more duplication. Craft time is not unlike hanging out with the Duggar family.
Wrapping this gift wasn’t reminiscent of how I’d normally complete the packaging. Typically, I pick a paper or colored tissue paper and wrap everything in that. Say it with me, “coordination is key.”
While visiting, Carrie left behind a t-shirt. I decided to wrap the candle in that. Being that it was a bulky tin, I figured the shirt could provide some extra cushion in the box I was sending.
Since she so subtly pointed this gift out, I played into her hint dropping with the tag’s text.
Next up were the two cups. I was given a box at Anthropologie and stuffed it with tissue paper and packing peanuts.
I really love this ribbon.
Which is probably why I ran out of it before I could finish with the packaging. I decided to fall back on a classic to wrap the audio book.
I pulled my best Tetris moves and packed up the box, sealing it all in with a layer of bubble wrap. Since I believe first impressions are important, I took the fourth tag and placed it on top to showcase the theme.
Then I sent it off into the dark unknown. Just kidding, that’s the Internet.
As wonderful as it feels to develop a concept and carry out a theme, the real pleasure is in hearing the recipient’s reaction. Or in as is the case with modern technology, in being able to see it from 1,300 miles away.
I think I done good.
Do you like to give themed gifts? How do you make your gifts special?
Your opinion counts! Are you changing your gift giving this year?
The Big Day

Well my friends, Christmas has come and gone in my house! Sure feels weird to go shopping on “Christmas.” We headed back to the Domain last night (where I got my Mac at Thanksgiving) to spend some gift cards. I had one for Origins which I thought were obsolete in Pittsburgh, but a quick search shows me they are housed inside Macy’s. Oh well. Anyway, so I went in there for the first time ever and was completely overwhelmed and not impressed by the associates. I felt like I got half-ass treatment and coming from years in retail that can be overwhelming (a man or first-timer in Victoria’s Secret is like catching a deer in headlights) that was not cool with me. I mulled over several mint-scented varieties and I was still feeling helpless, so I settled on A Perfect World Intensely Hydrating Body Cream with White Tea. Is anyone a big fan of their products? I should have Tweeted and asked for recommendations – live and learn.
Anyhow, back to Christmas! It goes without saying (but I will say it anyway) that I am truly blessed to have a wonderful, caring family who gives thoughtful gifts. I am also very upfront with the admittance that I am spoiled, but homegirl can defend and justify. I am not a I-live-for-Coach-True Religion-Manolo Blahnik-and-I-got-a-Mercedes-for-my-Sweet-Sixteen-kinda spoiled. I am someone who works hard and plays hard. I have been making some sort of income -whether secondary or primary – since my early teens and I like to treat myself to nice things. My parents are the same way. We don’t drive ourselves into debt, nor do we strive to compete with the modern-day equivalent to the Jones’. (Well some of us may have been taking the expressway to debtville, but it was all mainly out of necessity and measures have been taken.)
So, the gifting was good. I got the Garmin Forerunner 305 which now completes me as a runner, if I wasn’t already. I know there’s no way to train for a long race without being able to track it, so this also completely makes me committed to signing up for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon in May. Eek! I definitely christened this baby yesterday along with improv directions for a loop around my parents development so I didn’t have a repeat “Oh Shit, Shit, Shit” storm when I realized I was lost.
I also received three great cookbooks and some awesome kitchen accessories – pinch bowls and a brown sugar bear to name a few – and lots of cool odds and ends like jewelery, clothing, etc.
Methinks 2010 shall be a year of cooking! Perhaps a cupcake party is in order soon, too?
Christmas traditions here include new pjs and a new ornament on Christmas Eve, opening presents together one round at a time rather than a free-for-all and my Dad’s awesome Sticky Buns (similar to Monkey Bread if you’ve ever had it). We also frost the most amazing sugar cookies.
I feel as if this photo makes me semi-crazy-dog-lady, but I should offer a disclaimer we were just playing, I ensure no sharing/licking/kissing occurred – GROSS.
They are the best. And I’m not just saying that because they’re my Mum’s, everyone loves them. They make a great addition to morning coffee, I would know.
Other activities included watching “Food Inc.” (only saw half of it – other half and thoughts to come soon) and making a trip to Mighty Fine Burgers, an Austin chain with some great meat and the coolest hand-washing mechanism including stickers!!
And an interesting stance on beef:
My brother, sister-in-law and puppy left this a.m. to visit her family so now it’s just the three of us. Later today we are heading into Austin to rejoice in the mecca of the Foodie Universe: The Whole Foods flagship store. Foodies, take note, this is the one time for you to be jealous of me. Muahahahaha!
Crunch Time
December 21st, 2009 § 9 Comments
Hi y’all!!! Greetings from Texas. I am back to the South and L.O.V.I.N.G. this weather – 60s today! Quite a change from the several inches in Pittsburgh. I came into San Antonio last night and we got to go to Riverwalk which was Fab-u-lous!!
It’s a shopping and dining area Downtown along the San Antonio River, which, of course was decorated for the holidays, complete with BOAT CAROLERS!
I was the biggest tourist taking pictures on the edge of the sidewalk whilst my family was freaking out someone was going to push me in – wouldn’t that have made a great post? Good Lawdy. We ate Mexican at Cafe Au Lait and had a great view of the hustle and bustle below.
It’s supposed to be a gorgeous week – right now we have all the windows in the house open. I just can’t get over it.
The men of my family and I are going to tackle last-minute Christmas shopping today. I’m sure this is going to be real fun. I actually have just about everything done, there were just a few things I couldn’t order or successfully carry on. If nothing else, I am a pretty good organizer and planner so I’m not really someone who freaks out at the last minute. I also have a knack for gifting if I do say so myself. Are you feeling the crunch right now? Last year I didn’t have much money to spend on anyone so I did something unique. For my Mum, Dad and brother, I found an old picture of me and that person, blew it up to a 5×7 black and white and gave it in a simple black frame with white matting. For two of my other friends, I did the same thing for a recent picture. The kicker though was the card that went with it. It, too, was white with a black border I etched on the front with a single word written across it. On the inside, I wrote a letter with the significance of the word to the photo and my relationship with that person. Y’all, this is a shoo-in gift. Every. Single. Recipient. Got choked up. This was not my goal (OK maybe it was) but that’s how I knew it hit the spot. It’s cost-efficient and touching. In this life, people aren’t going to remember what you did for them, but how you made them feel. Here’s my Mum’s:
Yup, that’s me, circa 1985 in Baltimore with my Mum. Awww. I have a few surprises this year, too, but I can’t tell them yet for obvious reasons. We are doing Christmas tomorrow because my brother and sister-in-law are spending time with her family this week, too. I’m off to shop, wrap, frost and enjoy my day!!!
Are you feeling the crunch or do you have everything done? Anyone ever tried the homemade gifts? I love new ideas!
Number One

Hola friends! My apologies for not posting last night. It seems that some sort of virus has inhibited my body and I was completely wiped out last night. I usually only get sick once a winter season and I have been trying to stock up on flu prevention – vitamins, vegetables, Green Monsters, constant hand washing, etc. However, when you work with the public, I suppose it’s bound to happen. I just hope my manly voice subsides in the next few hours because sounding like Peter Brady is not cool, mmk?
Anyhow, let’s continue on with holiday chat shall we? As you can see, I love Christmastime. Crazy shoppers, constant carols and terrible traffic aside, it really is a wonderful time of year. However, as we age and grow up, the season becomes quite different. Being in your mid-twenties can mean a lot of changes. Aside from the general excitement of a new toy subsiding at age 10, if you have older siblings (check!) they may have families of their own that they spend the holiday with. Or, maybe you’re the one that’s spending time away from your family. Me? Homegirl’s spent every Christmas with Mum and Dad. And I’ll admit, I’ve never really had to even buy a man a Christmas present. The last time I had a boyfriend this time of year was in sixth grade. I bought him a Weird Al Yankovic CD. We broke up before we went on break. Guess who was jamming out to “Amish Paradise” then?
It’s not that I have never had a boyfriend. I have dated quite an array of men – and that’s putting it very, very nicely. I just have a hard time weaning myself from the independence I have built up for myself in the last 25 years. It takes a special kind of man to understand what my needs are. I mean, who wouldn’t want this?
Haha. But, seriously, the holidays can be a rough spot for singledom, no? No “plus one” for Ugly Sweater Parties, no one to pull under the mistletoe or string the lights on the tree. Wahhhhh. I know, right? You’re probably thinking, “Dude, shut up. Quit feeling sorry for yourself.” or, “It’s no wonder your ass is single you crazy bia.” And, hey, that’s cool, you’re entitled to your own P.O.V. There’s some days it can be a struggle for me, and others when I just roll with it. Like when my friends are crazy mad stressed because they don’t know what to get their significant other? Point! Or when they’re pissed because their partner’s holiday party coincides with their traditional girls’ day? Score!
So I usually rack up some major points in December, until said friends send me a picture message Christmas morning of the beautiful bracelet from Tiffany’s/pimped out iPod/brand new car/$1 million dollars from their man. I’m all like, “Yeah?? Well, I, umm, got this really pretty sweater!!!!” Just doesn’t have the same effect, people.
Someday, I’ll be on the flip side, snapping sweet shots of my loot and getting entirely too sentimental making new traditions. For now, though, I think I’ll just continue loving the fact that my Christmas shopping does not involve trips to electronic stores or trying to pick out the best giftset at Bath & Body Works for my mother-in-law nor do I have to endure awkward family dinners with creepy Uncle Joe. Point!
Stay tuned – I’m planning an update for December to Remember next post! How are you doing with yours?
What about you? Are you a fellow single holiday party goer? Or is it just the opposite and you find it hard to split time between families and make everyone happy? Let the commentary begin!
Christmastime is here again!
December 8th, 2009 § 6 Comments
Seriously could not stop singing that song last night, ya know the one from Charlie Brown??
Maybe it’s because I have never gone to “get” a Christmas tree – unless you want to count hauling it out from the storage space above my parents’ garage. Not quite the same.
Anyway, we successfully found a tree after countless walks up and down and UP and DOWN the aisles. At one point I said, “I feel bad for Christmas trees.” I have a tendency to give inanimate objects feelings and I couldn’t help but sympathize with the whole, “I-hope-I-don’t-get-picked-last,” scenario.
Then we strapped her to the roof and brought her home!!
I don’t know about you guys, but I am a huge tradition person when it comes to Christmas. There is a way certain things just have to be done! One of them is with the tree. I mean, I’m not gonna through the whole process of digging out decorations, unwrapping ornaments, making myself dizzy from putting the lights on the tree (yes this really happened) and the whole shebang if I’m not going to put the topper on the tree. It doesn’t matter what it is, but I feel like it’s just bad luck not to do it, ya know?! We spent a ridiculous amount of time at Target searching for the “right one” that wouldn’t completely clash with the rest of the tree. We ended up settling for something we already had – a pink studded Santa hat circa Victoria’s Secret 2005 (I may or may not have worked there in a past life.)
Those pineapples are not real BTW – but the hats just kill me.
So there you have it! I am probably the last person on the face of the Earth to decorate for Christmas. But isn’t it purty?! I feel like the holiday will be upon me faster than I am prepared for. Can you believe I fly back to Texas in less than two weeks? Ahh!
Stay tuned – I plan to continue the Christmas discussion in my next post – and let you in a little more on The Twenty-Fifth Year of my life (aka going to holiday parties without my “plus one.”)
If you’re visiting from Oh She Glows or Faith, Food & Fitness – Welcome! Please feel free to comment or email me – I love me some new readers!!
Spaaahhhh Day
December 3rd, 2009 § 11 Comments
Welcome back! I’m sure you’re just dying to know about how my spa experience went, right?! As part of my December to Remember, I decided to have a Me Day which included me finally using a gift certificate I’ve been hoarding since July. I may not be able to stop hittin’ the credit card, but man can homegirl save a gift card. It was given to me by my roommate for Christmas in July for a facial but after the first mile of my race was all tight, tight legs, I decided to use it toward a massage instead.
I went to The Body Bar Fitness & Spa. I go there all the time for tanning so I didn’t feel the need to do any research or ask for recommendations, but had this been my first time, I would have done my homework.
The massage itself was AWESOME. I know I use that word a lot, but guys, it feel good. Like wrapped up in a warm blanket on the world’s comfiest couch drinking coffee good. The massage therapist used the stones and it was wonderful. Before she started, she asked me what areas I wanted her to focus on. I told her my upper back and shoulders because I know that’s where I hold my tension.
The massage therapist overly agreed with me. In fact, her exact words were, “Your upper body is a mess.” Daaaaang. I guess the truth hurts. She told me I have spasms going down the sides of my back and the area between my shoulder blades is very, very tight. So tight that it’s not so much knots all over, but one hard mass of muscle. If I don’t start healing this now, I could be hunched over in 10-15 years!
Then she said, “Do you drink a lot of water?” Guys, I could barely help myself from laughing. All I could think about was the blog and my goal to drink 64 ounces a day. She said that lack of water was really building up the lactic acid in my back making my muscles “crunchy.” Now that just sounds gross. I’ve worked so hard training and treating my body well that I can’t let something as simple as water consumption (or lack thereof in my case) ruin it!
Something else she told me I wanted to share with y’all was about my shoulders. She said they are starting to roll forward a bit, especially on the left side – which could be from sleeping on that side or from extended computer use. I actually prefer to sleep on my right side so she recommended I sleep with a small pillow in the middle of my chest (like between my breasts) so one arm doesn’t hyper-extend over the side of my body. Given that many of you are fellow bloggers, and let’s just face it – computers dominate most of our lives – I thought this might apply to more than just me.
Do you have upper back or shoulder tension too? What works for you? I am dying to get more tips but I see some pillow shopping in my future this weekend! I’ve been meaning to replace mine – I’ve had them since college!
After my appointment, I felt like I was floating…all the way to Office Depot where I had to pick up a few things for work. Funny thing about that trip – the Christmas music in there was killing me. I honestly felt like I was listening to a holiday album put out by Michael Scott from “The Office.” The song was being sung by some middle-aged guy with lyrics like, “It’s Christmas time..we’re wrapping presents…the kids are excited…let’s eat some Christmas cookies!” I’m not even kidding. It was that random I had to stop in my tracks and just crack up.
I booked it outta there and decided that if I was going to get my water in for the day (and extra to make up for the dehydration a massage causes) I better eat something spicy! So I went to Chipotle and came home to attempt to conquer this:
Definitely couldn’t finish it – but adding a little guacamole did help me drink more water – mission accomplished! I am, however, still sipping.
I am just taking it easy tonight watching some bad television (MTV’s Jersey Shore premiere aka my life in Philly haha). I work the next two days but have plans to see some friends from home Saturday night – I am so excited! I love having something to look forward to, don’t you?
What are your plans this weekend – anything exciting or just low-key?
Let’s Make It A Good One
December 2nd, 2009 § 12 Comments
Hello hello friends! So glad you stopped by – seriously - please take a minute to leave a comment or email me – I love hearing from friends and new readers to this crazy-fun blog world!
So, as promised, I am embarking on Jessica’s December to Remember challenge. She wrote down five realistic goals for herself this holiday season (no need to try and embark on a total body and soul makeover in a mere 30 days, friends.) Since this is a time when many people wait until the obligatory Jan. 1 to roll out their life-changing ideas, I thought this was genius to start now, rather than feel like a month of bad decisions led me to make a change then. (Awesome Jess
)
So, what am I going to do, you ask?
1.) Drink at least 64 ounces of water every.single.day. I have never admitted this on the blog before, but your friend here is one seriously dehydrated chica. It’s not that I don’t like to drink water, I just get beverage ADD and move on to something else before I can ever finish a full glass – hence lots of half-full glasses inhabit the surfaces of this house. To put it in perspective – I worked 12 hours yesterday and didn’t use the restroom at all. Not. Good. My poor body needs this one more than ever. I have an aluminum BPA free bottle I always keep at work – now I need to actually take it out of the fridge and drink from it!
2.) Donate to charity. I know I have mentioned in the past that we do out best in my household to purchase products that give back to certain charities – Susan B. Komen for the Cure and Livestrong specifically – but I want to give back differently. Growing up, I can remember my Dad buying toys for a family in our town, leaving them on their doorstep Christmas morning. He and my Mum did something similar a few years ago for another family. I think giving back feels better than any other kind of giving or receiving, so I plan to do a few special Christmas gives this month.
3.) Take time for me. I feel a bit selfish typing that, but this, too, is something I need to do. I am all-top-quick to jump onto the “everything and anything bandwagon.” Go out Friday night til 2 a.m.? Sure I’ll come! Dinner on Tuesday? Let’s go! Come with me to my appointment/grocery store/car shopping/watch me dry my hair? HECK YES!!! Uhh, no. Heck no. I need to slow down and just be for a bit. There’s a difference between being busy and burning out and I am pretty crispy right now. I never give myself down time, which I got a lot of at my parents’ in Texas. My best friend even told me I sounded and seemed much happier and relaxed when I was gone. What a wake-up call!
4.) Continue and adopt more smart spending habits. We all know my history with this, and if you don’t, go watch this. I’ve got to admit, I am doing better than I thought (i.e. I don’t break down within a mile radius of a mall.) And get this – homegirl was cutting coupons last night. Yep, I went from spending my nights on sprees at the King of Prussia Mall to scouting out deals in the P&G Brand Saver. Oh what a difference a credit card statement makes.
5.) Shake up my workouts. I have taken some time off since my race last week, but I am definitely looking to add in some new cardio and strength training as well as to reignite the passion that once was in Amazing Yoga, wher a Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga Affiliate studio, otherwise known as “hot yoga.” Not only is this athletically challenging and a good workout, it is so cleansing and purifying. The co-owner of the studio is just an incredible teacher and I get something out of every class. I got really into it last winter, but when I changed jobs, so did my schedule. Time to get back to it – ooohm.
So, there you have it! My five realistic challenges for the month. What do you think? I’ll be letting you know of my progress, of course, but I think you should do it, too! Go check out Jessica’s blog and get inspired!!
Here’s a little holiday cheer to get you through your Wednesday!
Awwww…my first ornament! We get one every year on Christmas Eve – it’s a tradition!
How will you make this a December to Remember? Join in the challenge!

Happy Saturday friends! You don’t usually see a weekend post from me but I’m on vacation!! Yee Haw!!
As I said in my last post, I am not a Black Friday shopper. However, I have been contemplating a major purchase for several months now and knowing yesterday might be a great day to find a good deal, I took my Geek Squad (aka my brother) and went to do some research at the Apple store.
Currently, I have a Dell desktop. It still works just fine, but I can tell it’s starting to slow down. With the recent uptake of blogging, using it has limited me in when and where I can write. So I began researching several laptops. I looked into the one Verizon offers, as well as some from Dell and Sony. All along, though, I knew my gut was whispering, “Mac. You’re a Mac..Just do it, stupid.”
Cory, Sarah and I ventured down to the Domain, a very lush outdoor shopping area/mall? I don’t know, we have nothing of the sort in PA and spent some time in the Apple store, looking at different models and talking to the specialists. We decided to walk around a bit and think about it.
Of course a huge factor into this was the financial aspect of it. I knew I would have to finance the purchase but my family also offered to put some money toward it for Christmas. I crunched the numbers over and over again, and realized, yes I can afford this (and not be paying it off for the rest of my life.)
As we walked, I frantically emailed Happy Go Lucky Alex for some “machine advice.” She is a Mac user and said something very poignant:
Nevermind. Screw being realistic. You are a writer, you need a good machine. Scratch that. You deserve a good machine, Caitlin! Macs are the best hands down, stop walking, start buying.
I read that and said, “She’s right, I’m a writer, dammit. Let’s do this.”
So with that, a Mac user was born.
Alex congratulated me.
Thanks, girl!! So here I am, coming to you live from my new MacBook. I have to admit, it’s pretty nice to just chill on the couch or hang out in the kitchen and blog. Hello Bliss, I have arrived. Boy, a lot of changes already in this Twenty-Fifth Year! Thanks for joining me on the ride!!
The rest of the day was pretty low key. I had Cory and Sarah try Green Monsters:
Verdict? They liked it! Hey Mikey! (They both licked the little shot glass – so yeah, it was goooood.)
And me? Well c’mon..
Last night we had some Texas BBQ
Followed by Breakfast Tacos this morning both from Smokey Mos.
Mine was egg, cheese and potato with some piquante sauce. Mmmmm!
We I also put up the Christmas tree. It’s a tradition in my house that I always do this solo. Mum put up the rest – and always does – so I am happy to do the tree. I’ll post pics after tonight – it’s prettier with the lights! I’m off to go “window shop” accessories for my new baby – I think I need to name her! Any suggestions?
How’s your weekend shaping up? Any fun plans? Tonight we’re going to dinner and out in Austin – I can’t wait!!
Another one down
November 23rd, 2009 § 7 Comments
Hello friends!
Sorry you haven’t heard from me in a few – I have been exceptionally busy with a little thing we call work! Basically, I am getting in all my time before I head down south on holiday!
Another weekend has come and gone – care to recap what a 25-year-old’s looks like?
As I said in my last post, Christmas season officially began Friday! I attended my first Light Up Night. Boy was it ever an event!
That entire bridge was packed! And if you turned around, the opposite side of the street was just as crowded. It was nuts. (I loved it!)
We took a walk across the bridge to scout our food vendors. All I wanted was a gyro, but the tent was hidden with tiny signs we didn’t see at first, so I settled for a cheese steak.
Having spent a considerable amount of time in Philly, I now consider myself spoiled. No cheese steak even comes close to the original(s). When I asked the guy at the tent for cheese whiz, he looked at me like I just asked for tofu. I had to settle for provolone.
We walked around a bit then headed into Olive or Twist for a few beverages.
And, of course, proceeded to be silly fools
Then it was off to watch some sparkles in the sky!
We went out for a bit afterwards to a sports bar in the middle of the Stadium Loop. I would be lying if I said there was no dancing. Those who have never had the pleasure of going out with me surely would be in for a treat – I will dance anywhere, with anyone – no alcohol necessary! No, I am not one of those, “I don’t dance” people. I definitely get as much out of it as a workout. Apparently, this time around I even had a little audience watching me – I was too busy having fun making my friends laugh! I have a dance for every song
Saturday brought a full day of work followed by an evening spent catching up on Grey’s Anatomy and watching a Behind the Music documentary on Pink. I went to her concert last month and I think she is an amazing performer and a gifted musician. She sure has been through a lot and I admire her umm, general “I don’t give a f*&# attitude.” She says what’s on her mind!
Saturday I also made an investment piece purchase by buying a very nice carry-on bag for my future flights to Texas. More of that later this week!
Today, I once again – everybody! – “worked!” Tonight, we made family dinner, which is a slowly building tradition in our house where we cook dinner and invite over friends to share a meal and just connect. It’s a good way to start the week. Tonight we had delicious salad with tomatoes, avacado and my roommates specialty dressing followed by mashed taters and steak glazed with brown sugar – oh man was it good – and I am not a big meat eater!
We talked about our Christmas decorating ideas over dinner. We are going to go cut down our own tree when I get back – I cannot wait! We always had fake ones growing up so this should be an adventure!
Off to finish prepping to “start” my week even though I’ve worked five straight days.
How was your weekend? Do you mix up fun and relaxation too?
