C’mon Get Happy

Day Fourteen: Jan. 14, 2011

In lieu of our favorite New York breakfast, Carrie and I headed to Habitat, a restaurant in the new Fairmont Hotel in Pittsburgh. We arrived just after 10 a.m., just missing the rush and had the entire restaurant to ourselves. Situated on the second floor, Habitat houses a completely open kitchen, modern, heavy wood fixtures and a wait staff to make you forget your troubles. It’s safe to say I will be dreaming about this meal long after my plane takes off Sunday.

I don’t have to tell you how wonderful these chocolate croissants were. The flaky pastry was perfection – with chocolate drizzled both on the outside and waiting as a sweet surprise inside. Also on the menu for the two ladies? Muesli, which I am now officially obsessed with. It was a wonderful start to a packed day that started with retail therapy and ended in a hair transformation for both of us.

And since it’s Friday, why not post another one?

I might just float through the next three days.

Hue are you?

A few weeks ago, Ellen at Fired ‘N’ Fabulous posted an interesting “experiment” about our tendency to gravitate toward celebrities having the same hair color as you. I totally agreed, thinking of my favs – Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, UMMM….CARRIE BRADSHAW aka SJP – sorry sometimes I think that character is real.

P.S. She is on this month’s cover, too. Just came out..go get it!

I was born a blond and through the years, I’ve played a lot with the color. I got my first highlights when I was in eighth grade – they were cap highlights, do you guys remember those? Pulling the itty strands through that awful bonnet with the tweezer-like gadget? Ouch! I stayed pretty blond through high school and began experimenting in college. I had the longer, honey blond:

Then as it got longer, I started adding in dark underneath. Sometimes it was dark brown, or a reddish, at one point it was pretty close to black.

I even got some extensions (clip-in ones – real hair) and would wear them when my hair was at an in-between length.

Man, I loved those extensions. Maybe a little too much? haha

When I moved to Philly, I got my hair done at a really expensive salon (as in, I am ashamed to ever tell anyone how much I spent there) right in Center City. The man who did my hair made me a bit uncomfortable (don’t you hate that?) and said to me, “Oh you’re smart, keeping your hair long. The weight helps pull down on the curl to make straightening easier.”

A month later, I did some research, found an adorable place in South Philly and said, “Chop it – Victoria Beckham style.” I cut a good foot-and-then-some off and it hasn’t passed my shoulders since.

I’ve continued to experiment with different cuts and shades since then. Most recently, I got tired of the whole straightening bit and just let it go au naturel curly as you have seen in many pictures.

Yesterday, I decided it was time for a change.

Quite a change, eh?

Blond no more! I am officially a brunette. And although I can’t quite say that comfortably yet, I’m working on it.

Do I think my celebrity preferences will change? Tough to say. I guess it’s time to live out Ellen’s hypothesis and see if I change my mind!

What do you think? Does hair color play a role in preference?

Good teeth, bad hair

So remember when I told y’all about Operation Beautiful? Well I finally posted my note today!

Operation Beautiful

The initiative behind Operation Beautiful was spurred by Ending Fat Talk and I think it’s just amazing. I posted this at the dentist’s office this morning. Don’t worry I was only there for a cleaning (thank goodness!) but having battled what I did, I know that many days I left that place not feeling too great. This office has over 1,000 patients and it’s a unisex bathroom so I hope it makes at least one person’s day!

After my speedy appointment I came home to enjoy the beautiful weather we’re having. Look what came in the mail today!

Women's Health Subscription

I received a subscription to this magazine for my birthday from my dear cousin Michael and I was pumped to see not one but two of them came today!! Oh, and that’s my amazing table my Mum and I made with a bunch of my old newspaper clips decoupaged onto it. Love it.

Naturally I enjoyed the first one right away..

Fall on the deck

I literally had to keep leaves from falling into my coffee – but I wouldn’t change this weather for anything! (And yes, I am never without that phone – they don’t call them ‘Crackberrys’ for nothing!)

Among all the awesome articles in here – I think it’s my new favorite magazine – one titled, “Mane Street USA” caught my attention. It talked about how bad hair days can actually be chalked up to the city you live in and its environment, weather conditions, etc. Guess what the number three city for worst hair is? Pittsburgh, PA. Here I  thought living in D.C. and Baltimore gave me the worst hair days! Naturally curly hair with an owner who straightens it will not survive that summer humidity. And, hey, aren’t we supposed to be the U.S.’s ‘Most Livable City?’ It can’t be that great if we are all obsessing over our hair!!

Also on the worst on the list ranked by totalbeauty.com: Corpus Christi, TX, Olympia, WA, Las Vegas, NV, and Phoenix, AZ. The best? Honolulu, San Diego, Anchorage and San Francisco. Go figure.

The West Coast may have its perks, but I don’t think anyone wakes up to this..

Fall Morning

Where Am I?
