The In Between

Day 142
My favorite moments are what I like to refer to as the in between. Maybe I am testing lighting. Maybe the person is fixing their hair. Maybe they don’t know I’m shooting. Nevermind the reason, it’s just my favorite.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of getting behind the lens to capture these gorgeous shots of the beautiful, sweet, kind and loving Lisa. I’m so glad to have brought another blend into my life. Blogging has brought forth some of the strongest bonds and truest friendships I’ve ever known and Lisa holds true to that very description.
Seriously, is my job awesome or what?!
I’m so sad to see her make her way back to Oklahoma, but I’m overjoyed to know in her I have a friend for life, a new place to visit and a soul with which to connect with in good times and in bad. I could only hope for such a blessing on every one’s life.

Day 131
As humans, I believe we are programmed to look at things and dismiss them too quickly as ugly, useless or mundane. Who would ever think the slab of concrete beneath an underpass could serve as any kind of beautiful bakdrop for an image? It’s dirty. It’s slanted at a vertical degree that makes it hard to put anything on. It has random paint – including a ‘no parking’ stamp. How could you make this anything than just what it is?
If you look at it from a new perspective – one where it’s framed and angled differently – that slab of concrete, or anything else deemed ordinary or unworthy, it turns into this:
And this:
And just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, life is what we make it. Always has been, always will be.

Day 130
Sometimes in life, you stumble upon something really amazing. The same goes for a photo shoot. A couple of weeks ago, I spent the better part of four hours on a shoot in downtown Austin at Auditorium Shores. My gorgeous muse was posing all over the place – in the water, on top of a beat up shed, laying on the ground, steps, slopes – you name it. Toward the end, I eyed a gazebo and when we got closer I saw it held this baby. What a treasure! This piano was open to the public for anyone to sit down and play a tune.
It also made for some fantastic shots.
Eventually, a man did sit down and play a beautiful rendition of Imagine by John Lennon. It was quite the perfect afternoon in Austin moment.

I’ve heard of these pianos being placed in other U.S. cities. Have you ever seen or played one?

Day Ninety-Four

As we were about to wrap up Saturday’s shoot, a beautiful young woman emerged from a pickup truck. She seemed to float out of the vehicle and as she walked toward us with a photographer and videographer in tow, we couldn’t help but stand, mouths agape at the beautiful sight of her. It’s not every day you see garb fit for a QuinceaƱera in person. It was definitely a first for a group of people who grew up in the North.
After the adorable little girl I had been snapping photos of looked down at the young woman, she turned back at us to ask, “But where’s the prince?”
We couldn’t help but laugh at the innocence of her sweet question. I think we laughed harder a few minutes later after the excitement had passed when her older brother – almost to himself – said matter-of-factly, “There is no prince.”
Goodness, I love kids.
More photos from the shoot will be posted on my studio’s Facebook page this week so make sure you head over and give it a like!
